Try and come to Colorado and not come across a reference to “Fourteeners”. No, this is not a term for ornery teenagers (at least not here!) “Fourteeners” is a universal mountaineering term describing a mountain peak rising at least 14,000ft above sea level. They are significant here in Colorado, as the state boasts the majority of such peaks in all of North America- 53 to be exact. They play a huge part in Colorado’s mountain identity and serve as a spectacular playground for mountaineers both winter and summer.

December 27, 2011 – Ski Cooper, CO – Ski Cooper, located near Leadville, is opened with 100% of the mountain this morning for the 2011-2012 ski season with early season snow conditions. Lifts open daily at 9:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m., and the rental shop is open 8:30 a.m.
Long known as the “Crown Jewel” of Leadville, Colorado, The Delaware Hotel turns 125 this year. Built in 1886, this historic icon of Victorian elegance and architecture, located in the heart of historic Leadville’s downtown district, has housed both the famous and the infamous, with guests such as Carrie Nation, “Baby Doe” Tabor and Doc Holliday.
