HISTORIC LEADVILLE, COLORADO

Leadville is the highest incorporated town in the North America, and is located 103 miles west of Denver and 129 miles northwest of Colorado Springs, on US Highway 24.  It sits at 10,200 feet above sea level right at the bottom of Colorado's two highest mountains, Mount Elbert and Mount Massive. 

Once one of America’s richest, longest-lived and bawdiest mining boomtowns, silver was discovered in Leadville in 1879 causing the Colorado Silver Boom.  After decades of boom and bust economies, 70 square blocks of the downtown area is designated as a National Historic Landmark of Victorian architecture.

Summer activities include skiing, fishing, camping, golfing, hiking, whitewater rafting, four-wheeling, biking, museums, historical tours and train rides.  In nearby Twin Lakes, located 15 minutes from Leadville at the eastern entrance to Independence Pass, there is a National Historic District and a popular summer destination for camping, boating, hiking and fishing.  Leadville is home to one of North America's most grueling and respected mountain bike races, the Leadville 100.


Now one of the prettiest historic districts in the state, Leadville is an affordable alternative to staying in Summit County, only 24 miles away.
